Come un Sogno...part three

10/27/08

Monday, my alarm was set for 7:30am hoping to be out shopping early. Ha! I dawdled over my breakfast as I am wont to do and didn’t leave till 9:35. Caught the vaparetto to Ca’d’Oro and judging from the shopping carts I was not the only one with this idea. At the end of the narrow calle I turned left, over one bridge past the church on the right and there was Billa. Okay if I need to do this again I will have to go earlier because the place was packed…very much like my local… Continue

Come un Sogno...part two

10/25/08

It was 11am before I was out the door this morning. I decided to stroll around the corner and see if I could find the Billa that is supposed to be “just around the corner”. Well, I did stroll slowly, stopping to take pictures, buy more postcards and I think I found a place for my intended gondola ride…a quiet back canal. Twenty minutes and three bridges later I found Billa and I figured if I take the vaparetto to the Ca’d’Oro stop I could backtrack and have only one bridge and… Continue

Venice, Fall 2008, Ron Moline

September 30, 2008. I don’t suppose anything new under the sun can be said about Venice, surely one of the most written-about, painted, drawn, and photographed tourist destinations of the world. Further, it has been such for hundreds of years, the world’s oldest tourist town. What is there to say? How is it possible to avoid banalities and clichés?

Perhaps it isn’t; but I think almost everyone tries, because Venice is, simply, extraordinary, and unique. Yes, yes, yes, decaying… Continue

Discovering America’s Cultures (A Weekend in New Orleans)

Frank and I love to travel and whenever we have an opportunity to explore another area of “Hometown” America we take it whether it’s for a couple weeks or just a weekend. In the past few years we have had the opportunity to travel to Europe and learn about other countries’ cultures; but right here in the States, we can find a different culture in each state.

In October we had the chance to go to New Orleans, correctly pronounced I’m told as “Naw’lins”. I have always wanted to go… Continue

Put this on your must see list if going to the Salzburg, Austria area.

We went on our first Untour September 3-26. What a wonderful time we had. We visited the Rhine area for the first week, the Bavarian castle the second week and then went to the Salzburg area in Austria. We finished up the trip with two days in Munich for Oktoberfest. Like I said, we had a great time and each week had it's special memories and all are great choices for an Untour. I won't go into the details or try to convince anyone that they should do what we did. I will say as a first time… Continue

Come un sogno...like a dream: Part One

Come un Sogno…

Like a Dream

Or more like a fairy tale. As I was ferried by private motor launch across the Venetian Lagoon I began to recognize islands I had read about over the years. I was enjoying the autumn sun and the wind tossing my curls when out of nowhere I was in a small canal with multicolored houses rising on either side. Balconies and windows festooned with flower boxes seemed to welcome me. We turned a corner and there I was traveling slowly down the Grand Canal to… Continue

I was packing to come home from my "Venetian Affair". Yes, I'm madly in love with the city of my dreams. I'm still getting over the jet lag. It sucks to be wide awake at 3am and sound asleep at 7:30pm. Soon I will be posting some pictures and of course I'll do a "real" blog about my experiences roaming what is now my favorite city in the world.

A word to Lynanne, I got to experience the first Aqua Alta of the season and did not get to Burano to check out the tiny dog house. I will post a… Continue

Switzerland: Recession? Depression? Tourism?

Everyone seems to be (or will be) affected by the the economy's chaos right now. No matter what you choose to call it, jobs are lost, much less money spent, and less resources are gathered. The Swiss are well aware that what affects the USA will cross the Atlantic and affect Europe and themselves.

Today's Luzern newspaper has several articles regarding this. One deals with the likely fact the tourism (over 90% of the Swiss GDP is dealing with tourism), especially the number of…

October snow at Lac Gauthier, Canada

In response to my "View out the window" photo, Eleanor's cousin, Richard, and Danielle sent these photos of an October 28th snowfall at Lac Gauthier near Mont Tremblant, Canada. This is what Danielle said:

"Bonjour Bill,

The views from our windows ARE beautiful, although a bit different. As you may know, we had our first snow storm on October 28, thursday and that was what it looked like for 3 days. It is melting now and hopefully, I will be able to get my car up the…
