I don't know how many of you know this , but I got to sneak off and live in Paris for about four months last year. It had been a plot long in the hatching...nearly 40 years to be exact.
Some of you may know that the original idea for Untours was born in 1967, when Harold and Norma and their 14year old brat, Marilee, went off to live in Europe for Harold's sabbatical year off from teaching high school. Because we had to live on $5200 (half of a teacher's salary those days) we had to…

Things just get crazier and crazier to me. Michael Moore and Paris Hilton, admittedly not at the top of my favorite people's list, are two of the top stories this week. Poor Paris, who I think has all the attributes of a knot on a log, and Mike (laughing all the way to the bank) Moore are right in the top Yahoo News headlines today. It seems that Mike got bumped from Larry King's (don't get me started on that ding dong) show, so Paris could tell us how things went in the slammer. To add insult…

I know that we said we would keep all the feedback about the site on the forum, but I had a question that I was not sure about that I need several heads put together to solve.
We (me and Pete Haggart) are trying to figure out what makes videos play straight through versus stop and start. He and Maggie watched all the videos on the video page. The Fearless cooking one played straight through and so did my new instructional one.
Here is what Pete says:
You all had… Continue

Big doings today in Newport. The tall ships are here from all over the world. Germany, India, Brazil. etc. are here. Some great three masted brigantines, barques, and other sailing ships are moored in the harbor. One can take tours, meet crews, and watch these ships parade as they leave on Sunday. About 300,000 people are expected over the three days.
In addition to all that, President Bush was here today for several hours. RI was one of only two states in the union that he had not…

Little to do with travel but in a way, it does. RI is one of those cockamammy states that in all their wisdom does not require Kamikaze pilots (cyclists) to wear helmets. I wish someone could enlighten me about why the dipheads in the state legislature feel this is a wise move. I don't accept the idea that feeling the air blow through their hair is a valid reason. Is it population control? This is largely a catholic population, so maybe this is an alternative to abortion? Is the reason to…

I am in Santa Fe, New Mexico this week. Vacation for me, work for Susan. A good thing, in my opinion (not Susan's). There is a restaurant here, Paris Cafe Restaurant, with pastries and other assorted, French bakery things. It is actually owned by a Frenchman.
I had breakfast at the Paris Cafe this morning. A nice, warm day, I ate in outside. Everything had garlic. I now have a 5 foot radius, invisible bubble around me that no one will enter. I knew garlic was good for something. Of…

I was delighted to get to my desk this morning and see we have got fifteen new members in the Cafe! Yay! There are already some interesting discussions over on the the Forum. Check out Bill Kover's observations on the three columns at the bottom of our entry page, www.untourscafe.com. He isn't sure they work as they are -- some picitures are cut off (and we aren't either, so we would love your opinion.) Pete also has something to say on the subject of "friend requests"...always an interesting…

Since I have my own blog about everything that goes on, travel and non-travel, I won't be on this blog a lot, but if you want to see my rants and raves, you can find them at

My wife, Elaine, and I took the Umbria Untour in 2005. It was one of the greatest travel experiences we ever had. The Untour was so well managed and made traveling so easy. We stayed at a wonderful farm in Umbria, met some great friends, toured some wonderful sights in Umbria, and can't wait to repeat the experience as soon as we can. Our two new grandchildren are keeping us quite busy this year but we look forward to our next trip.

This is a perfectly beautiful site. The colors are tasteful, the graphics are pleasing, navigating the site is easy, and the idea is fun. Thank you, creators, for setting up a lovely place to visit.

Welcome to the first unveiling of the Untours
Café! We've asked you to take part in this private friends-and-family-only round of trials since we value your ideas and know that you'll excuse the "construction" as we continue to work on the site.
We hope you'll use the Untours
Café to connect with friends, family, and other Untourists. You can set up your own page, upload trip photographs, showcase your best… Continue

here is my test post. I just heard something fascinating on NPR this morning about a book called Four Seasons in Rome.
