I read the following article on the website BonjourParis.com. Because it reflects the kind of experience you get with Untours, I wanted to share this with anyone who is wondering what an Untours vacation is like. We did our 2008 Paris Untour in the rue Montorgueil neighborhood with simlar experiences described in the article. Next Spring we will again spend a month in Paris through Untours, but in a different neighborhood close to Place des Vosges. We will make new friends there I'm sure. But…

31 May 2007
Barbara and I left Zurich for the USA on 30 May this week. As usual, we shipped our luggage to the airport, so we did not have to schlepp the bags from two trains. The baggage is kept at the "to claim" section of the airport's SBB station where one picks up it with claim checks before checking in. No problems as usual. HOWEVER, this year we were told that they would sell us baggage checks for our use when we returned in a couple of months.
As I went in to… Continue

We made it onto the Thirteen PBS National Parks documentary! Part of the interview is shown about 1/3 of the way into the show (7:55 - 9:33 minute mark). Some more of the interview is shown towards the end (22:44 - 23:43 minute mark). They used a LOT of my photos, 8mm film and some video segments. I was shocked how much they used. The even showed some clips from our wedding in 1970! I guess the other interviewees didn't submit much video or movie film.
The show can now be seen online…

Grand Teton National Park. July, 1995. We were out for a drive hoping to see some wildlife. There was no one else on the road. I slammed on the brakes. The view was so beautiful that it didn't seem real. An artist needed to appear and put this all down on canvas. Camera film or video tape just was not worthy of this scene. I snapped a photo anyway, fully realizing that it wouldn't be the same as in real life.…

On July 8, 1995 we had planned to tour Badlands National Park. We were out of the motel and on the road by 6:24am. Our first stop was White Lake, South Dakota. Breakfast wasn't the only reason we were headed there. We had to reconnect with the past.
The last time we were in White Lake was on July 15, 1970. Back then our main reason for stopping was to buy a bug screen for our car radiator. Eleanor's journal devoted just a few words to remember that town: "Stopped at White Lake.…

On October 4, 2000 we were in Mont Tremblant, Quebec visiting Eleanor's cousin, Richard. A friend of his is a judge, who owns a vacation home in the Mont Tremblant area. We were all invited over for dinner at his cabin. Nothing special happened except for something that haunted me a year later. We were having a discussion, when the judge mentioned that his daughter and a friend would be traveling to New York City. He asked us if we could recommend a restaurant that she would enjoy. Years before…

PBS Channel Thirteen is preparing a half hour piece about the National Park experiences of people from the New York Area. On their website www.thirteen.org, they asked viewers to "Share your National Parks Memories." I submitted two pieces. They liked both. We were invited to come into New York City for an interview.
Today was our appointment with producers at PBS Channel Thirteen. We caught a bus to to Port Authority Bus Terminal New York City. The interview was to take place at 35…

It was July 11, 1995. We had just left having our 25th anniversary dinner at the Yellowstone Hotel in Yellowstone National Park. We had consumed a bottle of wine and a full bottle of champagne. We were drunk! But we had to get back to our Canyon Village room. I started driving but thought better of it since it was totally dark. I pulled over and went for a walk by the river, trying to sober up. I pulled out the camera, and decided to try taking a photo of the full moon shining on our…

This month is the scheduled Ken Burns special "The National Parks". PBS channel thirteen has been asking viewers to send in stories, photos and movies or videos of their experiences at the National Parks. I sent in a story of an incident that happened in 2006 at Sentinel Point in Yosemite National Park. I was trying to duplicate a photo I had taken in 1971 of Eleanor sitting in front of a boulder on Sentinel Dome. Eleanor could no longer walk the trail she did in 1971. So I was forced to go it…
