The Affair of the Necklace

We recently watched the movie The Affair of the Necklace, staring Hilary Swank. For those of you not familiar with the true story, it's about a French noblewoman named Jeanne de Valois, Comtesse de la Motte, who is known for her role in the "Affair of the Diamond Necklace", one of many scandals that led to the French Revolution and destruction of the French monarchy.

Episode (3) The day we encountered Senator Edward Kennedy, President Clinton, and received a greeting from the Secret Service

The Master of Ceremonies was Mike Wallace. Once the color guard marched out, Mike Wallace introduced Senator Mark O. Hatfield and Senator Daniel K. Inouye, Co-Chairs of the FDR Memorial Commission to say a few welcoming words.

They were followed by the Goddaughter of the Roosevelts, Her Royal Highness, Princess Margriet from The Netherlands. Since Franklin D. Roosevelt was of Dutch descent, The House of Orange (Netherlands) produced a… Continue

Episode (2) The day we encountered Senator Edward Kennedy, President Clinton, and received a greeting from the Secret Service

The Washington Post reported that 6 to 7 thousand people attended the FDR Memorial Dedication Ceremonies.

We had never seen a 4 star general in person before. But there in the VIP section was a 4 star general looking for his seat.

Sitting next to Eleanor was a man named Bob from Hadley, Massachusetts. He and his wife had just been interviewed by a CBS reporter. They are… Continue

Tales of Andalusia - Part Ten

Monday October 1 - Setenil de las Bodegas

Our local Untours host, Maria, had told us at orientation in quickly whispered Spanish: "Visit Setenil de las Bodegas when you go to Ronda". We were pretty tired when we ended our adventurous day in Ronda, and it was seven in the evening, but we decided to go to Setenil anyway. It was on the way "home", more or less.

We drove into the town during that golden hour of the evening, and it was… Continue

Episode (1) The day we encountered Senator Edward Kennedy, President Clinton, and received a greeting from the Secret Service

We had a few anxious moments before leaving on our trip. The tickets to the FDR Memorial Dedication ceremony hadn't arrived yet. The scheduled departure date for our trip to West Virginia was Sunday, April 27, 1997. The tickets finally arrived Monday, April 21st.

The morning of the ceremony we were up and out of our motel room by 6:48am. We managed to find a handicapped parking space near the National Air and Space Museum. Eleanor… Continue

(Preface) The day we encountered Senator Edward Kennedy, President Clinton, and received a greeting from the Secret Service

Preface

May 2, 1997. The FDR Memorial Dedication Ceremonies in Washington, D.C.

As a result of a donation made in 1994, we received an invitation to attend the dedication ceremony for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial to be held in Washington, D.C. on May 2, 1997. Since we had already made plans to visit friends in West Virginia April 27 to May 1st., it was convenient for us to add an extra two days to our trip. I wasn't too enthusiastic about this side… Continue

New York City Untour

For those of you interested in the New York City Untour, the following Governors Island website might be of interest:

http://www.govisland.com/

There are no cars on the island. You can rent a wide variety of bikes (first hour is free), including quadcycles (4 wheeled cycles). It offers a great view of the Statue of Liberty. Best of all the ferry ride and admission to Governors Island are free.
