Paris 2001 - Part 2

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20 - DAY TWO (Cont'd)

The apartment is cozy, just the right size for two people. The living/dining area is to the

left of the entryway, the small kitchen is straight ahead, and the

bedroom and bath are to the right. Across the far end of the

living/dining area are floor-to-ceiling windows behind dark red drapes,

pulled back to allow a view of the massive white brick wall of the

building across the courtyard. Above the wall can be seen rooftops… Continue

Paris 2001 - Part 3

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20 - DAY TWO (Cont'd)

So....we set off down Rue Lacepede, being careful, for the safety of life and

limb--traffic can be hectic--to stay on the narrow sidewalk, except

when we must navigate around the cars parked halfway across it. Some

streets, like Rue Lacepede, are so narrow…

Paris 2001 - Part 4

If anyone is wondering why I am

writing about Paris 2001, so many years later. Well, I just started

blogging a few days ago and I want to (1) jump into it with a big

project, sinking or swimming, as the case may be, (2) make a record of

the trip even at this late date, because I didn't at the time (I never

wanted to set foot outside my own familiar surroundings again—silly

me), and (3)…

FRIDAY, JUNE 22 - Day Four

We do not get home until 1:00 am after walking all over Paris last night during the lively Fete de la Musique. Even then, street revelers kept the noise level high till 3:00 am or

so. We awake about 11 am, slake our thirst with water and have a quick

snack of nuts & raisins, then fall back into bed, exhausted. The

early afternoon heat wakes us up at 2 pm. Seems we've slept away over

half the… Continue

MONDAY, JUNE 25 - DAY SEVEN

This is the day we have chosen to join various and sundry other strangers from round the globe on a Paris Vision tour, in a comfortable and air-conditioned bus for an all-day outing to Normandy and the incomparable Mont Saint-Michel. After our 3 hours of sleep (see… Continue

Paris 2001 - Part 7

Just a reminder about my Paris 2001 category...I am exorcising some,

shall we say, less than happy memories by finally, six years later,

writing about our one and so far only trip to Paris in late June 2001.

Living it at the moment was at times difficult, but from this distance

I have found many things both humorous and lovely to remember. I want

to return one day and try again to experience the beautiful city of

Paris, when the weather is cooler!…

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 27 - DAY NINE

Today it's back to Paris Vision and our favorite air-conditioned buses, not

to mention the great tour guides with their charming French accents. We

arise early, catch the underground metro, and assemble in front of the

Paris Vision office along with many others who will join us on a

10-hour tour of the two… Continue

Paris 2001 - Part 9

Note: It's

back to my Paris adventures during the summer of 2001, where I am

attempting to record the trip and show a few photos. As I've mentioned

in previous posts, this trip was just too overwhelming, some bad, some

good, and when we got back I simply had no will or energy left to put

photos in an album or write about our adventures. It's six years later,

but I find the memories come…

Paris 2001 - Part 10

This concludes

my saga of our trip to Paris in 2001. If you are interested in seeing

the entire set of blogs, I've collected them under one label in my

sidebar, entitled "Paris 2001."

SATURDAY JUNE 30 - DAY TWELVE

Fooding Spain

It's been ten years since last I was in Spain. That time I was passing through quickly on my way to Africa. I have hazy memories of wide open spaces, one grand building, and the small hostel my friend Eliza and I stayed at in Madrid. Oh, and I remember the overnight train rides.

It's evening when I begin my trip from the Philadelphia airport to Madrid. I'm excited and nervous. I don't like take offs and landings so I'm trying to keep my…

Lunch with Untourists

In 2006 Fred and I thought it would be fun to meet other Untourists for lunch. We check the Idyllchat for people who lived in our area of Massachusetts or perhaps New Hampshire. We had been emailing back and forth for over a year with a couple from New Hampshire, Idabella and Bert. They agreed to met us for lunch at the Common Man in Concord, NH; we sat over 2 hours and had a delicious lunch, interesting conversation and mutual interests. The time past by so quickly; we were…

Pacific Northwest - Mountains to islands with the grandkids

Our grandson and granddaughter often comment on how many places we've traveled, so this August we took them cross-country to explore Washington State. It was so much fun seeing it all through their eyes! We began in the mountains on a Mt. Baker hike.

The Ptarmigan Ridge trail starts out in the snow even in mid-August which made the kids happy! After a short walk across the snowfield, we were back onto a normal but pretty spectacular ridge…

The Joy of Fly-Fishing

It was so enjoyable reading the Cafe staff recommended article in the New York Times about fly-fishing in Greece. Just hope the fishing is still good there, in view of the terrible fires they are having. The article brought back wonderful memories of many hours spent with youngest son, Jim, trying to perfect the art of attracting a fish to the fly, and thought I'd share a few photos of these efforts.

The photo above…

Weather Trip Planning

In the Travel section of today's Sunday Star Ledger, I read about a handy online site that can be a valuable tool in planning your next trip:

www.wunderground.com/tripplanner/index.asp

I've heard of this site before on IdyllChat. However, the option I really like on this site is the weather history for a particular location. I entered Paris for our Untour trip scheduled for next Spring. Not only did I get the…

Switzerland 2004-Heartland Triplog Part 2

Sunday, August 29th

We spent part of our morning visiting the Bruggers. We exchanged photos of our families and had a very nice visit with them; we had brought a small family album with us. Ernst showed us pictures from the Swiss newspaper of festivals, and parades. These parades were held between…

Switzerland 2006 Part 1

Monday, August 21st we returned to Meiringen, Switzerland for our third Untours Adventure. We left Boston a day early and stayed overnight at the Allegra Hotel in Kloten (very near the airport).

[ Draft ]Switzerland 2006 Part 4

Tuesday, September 5th we finished our packing this morning. Our trip today would be Kandersteg. We trained and connected through Spiez; arrived in 2 hours just in time for our picnic lunch in a picturesque park. A few of the shops were closed from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. We bought a few gifts for our family and friends. It was a perfect day the sun was shining brightly, and the blue sky enhanced the mountains and this charming village. …

So, we're back

Eight hours of video, four full or nearly-full SmartCards of still photos and a travel diary that's remarkably thick (considering it breaks off at Day 10), we have returned from Switzerland (with a few days in Germany). We'd go back in a heartbeat.

For one thing, the list of things we'd like to do only increased exponentially with every item we crossed off the list. For another, we really liked the place. Two weeks in Switzerland isn't nearly enough, even when it's raining most of the… Continue
