Our trip to Roma with Untours last year was so successful that we returned on our own this year. That's both good news and bad news for Untours, I guess. Bur mostly I think it's a testament to how well Untours prepares us to experience and navigate these wonderful places.
We found our apartment over the Web and think it would make a great Untours apartment. It is just 4 blocks from the Piramide and the station. Very convenient for Metro, bus and Ostia train. You have to imagine going…

For nearly 35 years, I've worked with wine (restaurants as a wine buyer, 18 years as a retailer), and what has come to fascinate me is the evolution of wine as a function of the culture in which it evolves. This, I can only explore in the "Old World" - the vinifera family of vines didn't exist elsewhere - so travel to Europe is a necessity.
Here's what's missed by so many "wine writers" and wine magazines. Wine is NOT a "consumer product." In the "Old World," where wine evolved, it…

Two more men have died on the North Face of the Eiger. Read about this here:
http://tr.im/hSsq
These two well trained men surely must have reached the summit, but like others, died on the way down. The weather is what caused them to die on what a lot of climbers believe is the most dangerous part of a climb, the descent. That part of the effort is when fatigue is the greatest, and the tendency to become careless is the greatest.

And some people have asked me why I would ever move to CH??? Well, here is a reasonably good answer. I know that the Swiss are a bit nervous about a decrease in tourism, but this should take care of that. Even with my arthritic bod, I may have to get out and about, but I will wait until summer. I can only imagine how popular this will be with the Idyllers. So much for cross cultural exchange, right?

Monday, 1 October: our adventure in Ronda continues
Behind the
Casa del Rey Moro, with its mysterious
mina, is a terraced garden designed by the same man who created the Parque de Maria Luisa in Seville.
We spent a long time enjoying the quiet and the shade. Leaving the gardens, the cobblestone street wound its way down to the two older bridges of Ronda. We stopped for
cerveza and
tinto de verano - it was a hot…

Sunday, 30 September Domingo al Cortijo - Sunday at the Farm:
Sleeping in late this morning really set the tone for today -
vacation! Actually it's all been feeling very relaxed and vacation-like, but this day was especially lazy. It was almost eleven by the time we took our
cafe and
tostadas out onto the patio for breakfast. We heard some noises down by the pool. Peeking over the railing, we saw a gentleman caring for the pool... must be Dolores's…

Monday, 1 October
Our day in Ronda was magical. The drive was gorgeous - two and a half hours through farmland, around mountains, past
embalses and picturesque towns. I couldn't stop taking pictures.
Every town has either a church or a ruined tower up on a hill, with white-washed houses nestled on the slopes below. Where the town ends, miles of…

Driving in the Subbetica
... thought I'd share an excerpt directly from my travel journal:
"Gabe really
gets driving here. He quickly figured our how to get in and out of Carcabuey, which is full of sharp turns, one-way streets, pedestrians, and other vehicles. He soon saw that the thing to do in a pinch is drive on the sidewalk, and quickly added that maneuver to his reperatoire! He also confidently explored what we believed…
