I was there this time last year. I have a PacSafe handbag (they have men's wallets too). This bag has steel mesh in the bottom so it can't be cut, a steel cable in the strap and many security clasps and locks that make it hard for a theif to get into. You can even strap it to a chair or table leg in a restaurant. And it isn't any heavier than most normal handbags. I never had a problem but I wasn't in tight crowds and I didn't ride the public bus. I did use the hop on hop off bus which goes to all the major places and walked around alot. I never felt unsafe.
The instructions I had were to be aware of your surroundings and remember that any kind of distraction (even a woman dropping a baby) is meant to distract you so that theaccomplice can get your valuables. This kind of thing has happened to people I know.
Best advice, treat it like any other big city and keep your money/valuables in a save place...like a money belt or your hotel safe and only keep enough cash in purse or wallet that you will need that day.
Last but not least, try to relax and enjoy yourself.
