I received an email message from you via Untours cafe, however, when I go to the discussion forum I cannot see the message to reply to you. We are going to St. Goar with Untours in September. I also posted for info on the Untour Cafe and only received one reply. Another source for questions and information is the Idyllchat discussion group which I find much more responsive than the Untour cafe. http://www.untours.com/idyllchat.html )
This will be our second Untour and we are doing the sampler with the first week in Leiden, Holland and the second week in St. Goar on the Rhine. We had a great experience with Untours in Northern Tuscany and are looking forward to this trip. Since Germany uses the rail pass for local transportation our plan is travel very light...one small rolling suitcase each...that we can hopefully handcarry on the plane.
Hi Tina, We'll be in St Goar this Wednesday (4th) for three weeks. "Daytrips Germany" by Earl Steinbicker is excellent for trip and restaurant planning. Keep in mind that the Untours people will be on hand to help you learn the train schedule intricacies as well.as reccomend day trips. We use a Capital One money market account with on-line banking to avoid the 3% currency conversion charge from dollars to euros that our Visa card charges. You willl do fine.. Don
Tina!
September will be perfect for your trip and you will love it! We stayed in Kaub last year. You will get a marvelous orientation (hopefully by Rita) and she will give you lots of tips on where to go and also how to use the trains. Be sure to take some time to see the Mosel River. We went to Trier one day and loved it! Also did a hike up to Burg Eltz castle which was fabulous. We were only on the Rhine for a week so if you are going for two, you will have lots of time to do all you want. We used our credit card at ATM's for cash. Be sure to call you credit card company to let them know you will be traveling. Auf Wiedersehen Joan
You asked when our visit was - some time ago - May/June of 2001!
But is still a wonderful memory of a great visit - we did two weeks on the Rhine in St Goar and then a week in Berlin. On most all of our Untour trips we usually eat breakfast and lunch out and cook dinner in the apartment - but do treat ourselves to eating out for dinner a few times during the stay. We shop in the local grocery to find breakfast and dinner items - usually stocking up for breakfast and snacks and then stopping at a shop on the way home in the evening to pick up something for dinner - even something pre-cooked - like roasted chicken, which seems to be available everywhere! Can't give you any particular places to eat as it has been some time. Note that menus are posted out front of all eating places and some have a cheaper "set" meal with limited choices and perhaps three courses. So we say - just trust your judgement and if you see a place that has reasonable prices and looks inviting - and has lots of people eating - go for it. If you have any more questions let us know. We have traveled with Untours for a number of years now.
Just looked at the photo page for the Rhine at the Cafe - you will find a few photos of ours on page four - and please note the photo of the gold triptych in the church in the village where you will be staying - a must see!! Pete
We are going to be staying in Oberwesel the 2 weeks before you are there I think. We are going to get there on August 25 for 2 weeks. We have been on 5 Untours to several differant places but never Germany. I assume that you will be staying in the same apartment that we are in the two weeks before. We will let you know about any interesting trips. etc. and leave you a message with the land lady. Our experiences with transportation have always been good on trains, boats or buses. Be sure and go to the first orientation meeting. They will have all the info you need and you can ask questions about what to do etc. If you need help anytime during your stay, you can contact the leaders and they will always help you . Have a wonderful time!! Margaret and Jack Stunkel
Hi Tina, we had a great time on the Rhine - one of the pleasures was just riding the KD - drinking excellent beer and eating pretzels, and looking at all the castles.
I can't remember the name of the hotel in St. Goar where we ate lunch (Lorilei, I think. It's probably where you'll meet the Untours guide for the orientation). We had a _fantastic_ lunch - I had some sort of wurst - w/very tasty mustard and potatoes that melted in your mouth. I wish I would have had a chance to eat there again. Another restaurant you might check out is an Italian one in St. Goar. Go on the main street (there's only one!) - past one Italian rest. on the left (which was fine). There's a little Italian rest. up the alley on the left. (Maybe the next alley, or the one after, the first Italian rest.). You can't miss it. There's a very pretty little porch where you can sit outside (quite small). I wasn't hungry that evening, so I just enjoyed some wine, but my daughter ate this awesome bowl of pasta with fresh garlic and olive oil.
