Tuscan hot springs - Bagni di Petriolo

We relaxed a couple of hours in these natural hot springs on the banks of the river Farma, southern Tuscany.
A great place for a picnic, a hot bath and a refreshing dive in the river. That's what quite a few Italian families did on this Saturday afternoon in June.
At the source, the water has a temperature of 43°C (110°F). You can clearly smell the sulfurous volcanic gasses that come with it. The locals say those vapors are very beneficial to your health.
Also, they showed us how to scrape a kind of mud from specific rocks, and put this on your face and body. Makes the skin very smooth indeed.

People have been taking baths here for over 2000 years at least. The springs are mentioned by the Roman authors Cicero and Martial.
When you sit in the water, you'll see the remains of what apparently looks like a Roman bridge, next to the one that is in use now.

These are "terme publiche", public baths. Here on the river, there are no facilities whatsoever, but it's all perfectly free.
Bagni di Petriolo is located about 35 km east of Buonconvento.
