After a full day at sightseeing at Chateau Versailles and Gardens, we checked into our room at the Royal Hotel. Once settled, we walked over to Cafe Lazare on rue de Satory in the city of Versailles. We were the first customers at 7:00pm. It was still early for dinner by French standards. Our waitress brought us a French menu and an English menu. We told her that we want to try ordering from the French menu. She seemed pleased. She had a big smile when we pronounced the words correctly. Then the evening became special. The restaurant soon filled. That is a good sign. Eleanor ordered escargot to start, followed by grilled lamb chops. I chose vegetable soup (not like American vegetable soup) with chicken brochette as the main entree. A bottle of Bordeaux wine accompanied the meal. All this was ordered in French. Next to us was a charcoal grill which the cook soon filled with charcoal. Then we watched as he prepared our meal before our eyes. When ready, our dishes were transferred to our table in seconds. What a fabulous, delicious meal we had. The cook and waitress seemed to enjoy the event as well. For dessert, Eleanor had Creme Brulee Vanille, while I chose something called Profiteroles XL. I exclaimed "Sacre Bleu!" when I saw my dessert. The waitress smiled. It was vanilla ice cream in a cream puff surrounded by mounds of whipped cream and some chocolate syrup thrown in. So if you ever do an overnight in the French city of Versailles, check this cafe out. Chances are you will remember it always.
